The Bear & The Hare – A truly inspiring animation

I really love when artists combine different methods of animation. In this animated commercial (shown below), they mixed stop motion and classic animation to create a truly inspiring piece. The commercial launched this weekend on British TV, and it’s the latest in a series of Christmas ads from John Lewis.

It was created by ad agency Adam & Eve/DDB, Directed by Elliot Dear and Yves Geleyn and as a soundtrack it features Lily Allen singing Keane’s 2004 hit “Somewhere Only We Know”. Character designs were made by Disney’s Aaron Blaise, the director of Brother Bear, who had also worked on The Lion King and Pocahontas among other classics.

What was truly an inspiring moment for me was to watch the “Making of” and see the technique they used for the animation. Before watching it I believed the drawings were composited into the live footage by one of the composite softwares available. but I was wrong:

They actually cut out all the drawings and animated live on the set! the advantages of this of course is the use of the lighting of the set as well as a good overall image quality. The downside is that it’s probably more expensive (The animated advert cost £1m to make) and in a way, you’ll have to “animate” twice.

Have a happy holidays everyone,

Guy.

This is incredible short by Edwin Schaap. I love it!

So many emotions!, he did a great job delivering emotions to the audience.

I really like the animation job on that boy face.

Animation workflow tutorial by Kevin Jackson

I found this on the “Anim-Dailies” group in Facebook. Its a nice blocking technique used by animator Kevin Johnson.

He is basing his technique on some tools from MGTools which I didn’t know exist and now I want them as well 🙂 . The Anim recorder tool is especially handy and cool.

His approach is super fast and in 10 min he is blocking something that will probably take a few hours at least if done in a more “traditional” way (although all his poses was saved at front but still!) .

here it is:

And here is part 2 of his  blocking tutorial which he use other tools like the anim-library (again from the MGtools). the facial expressions he made here are just pure gold.

Hope you like it. Till next time,

G.
